Next to creating a life, the greatest thing
one can do is save a life.
You cannot bring about prosperity by
discouraging thrift
You cannot strengthen the weak
by weakening the strong
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling
down the wage payer.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more
than
your income
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by
inciting class hatred.
You cannot build sound security
on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking
away man's nitiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for
them what they
could and should
be doing for themselves.
"We all declare for liberty; but in using the same
word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of
his labor; while with others, the same may mean
for some men to do as they please with other men
and the product of other men's labor. Here are
two, not only different, but incompatible things called by the same name - liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties,
called by two different and incompatable names - liberty and tirney." |
